Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
